Known throughout the world, it is the most widely planted grape variety in France. Originating from the Bordeaux region, where it occupies more than half of the vineyards, Merlot owes its name to blackbirds ("merles"), which are particularly fond of its large, black grapes. Its name is linked to iconic appellations such as Pomerol and Saint-Émilion, and even legendary wines like Château Pétrus. This easy-to-grow grape variety produces red wines with present yet supple tannins, featuring typical notes of red and black fruits.
