It is one of the most widespread red grape varieties in the world. This hardy Mediterranean vine thrives in heat, wind, and drought. A single sip of Grenache wineis enough to feel all the charm of the southern terroirs. This grape variety, very common in France, gives rise to wines that are often warm and fruity. Its taste is often reminiscent of sunny days and simple pleasures. Over time, this wine has captivated many enthusiasts. But where exactly does it come from? What makes its character so unique? Let’s take the time to explore this rather special grape variety in the world of winemaking.

Origin and history of the Grenache grape

The Grenache grape is said to have originated in Spain, specifically in the Aragon region. It subsequently developed extensively in the south of France. As early as the Middle Ages, it could be found in the vineyards of Languedocand the Rhône Valley.

This grape variety adapted to dry soils and a hot climate. Even today, it is widely used in fruity red wineblends. It is also found in certain rosé winesand even in renowned vintages. Thanks to its natural richness in sugar, it produces round and warm wines.

Grenache is therefore a pillar of southern wine. It continues to be cultivated in France, but also in Italy, Spain, and Australia. Its success lies in its ability to produce generous wines that are easy to drink and rich in aromas.

Characteristics of the terroir and the vine

The terroir is a determining element in the personality of Grenache wine. The hillsideswith good exposure, as well as the
diversity of limestone, gravelly, or clay-limestone soils, offer the vines an environment conducive to a slow and complete maturationof the grapes. This process gives red wine its intensity, its roundness, and its silky tannins.

Furthermore, the balance between acidity, minerality, and aromatic power is found in every vintage, thus highlighting the richness of the terroir. The winemakers who share our vision at Let it BIB place great importance on the selection of plots to ensure the creation of great wines.

Winemaking and the art of blending

The winemaking of Grenacherequires precision and experience, because this grape variety allows for the production of both powerful, fruity red wines and naturally sweet wines. The long maceration of the berriesdevelops intense aromas of black fruits, licorice, and sometimes spices or floral notes.

Blending with complementary grape varieties such as Syrah, Mourvèdre, or Carignanbrings complexity and harmony to the vintage. Alcoholic fermentation in stainless steel tanks or barrels helps to preserve freshness while developing the aging potential of the vintage.

What should you pair with a Grenache wine?

Grenache wine is an excellent dinner companion, especially when it comes to southern dishes. It pairs very
well with generous cuisine: grilled meats, confit vegetables, slow-cooked meats, or spicy dishes find a natural ally in it. Its round and fruity side also makes it possible to pair with lighter recipessuch as a savory tart or a mixed salad with Mediterranean accents.

When it is fuller-bodied, a Grenache wine pairs wonderfully with a Provençal stewor roasted lamb with herbs. It fits in easily at meals with friends or impromptu picnics. Some even enjoy it with soft-ripened cheese, such as a Brie or a well-aged Camembert. Its supple profile ensures it does not overpower the dishes.
