Origins and history of Pinot Gris

Pinot Gris is a noble white grape variety originating
from Burgundy
before becoming firmly established in the Alsace vineyards. This grape, historically called Tokay Pinot Gris, has crossed the centuries to become a staple in several European wine regions.
The first traces of its cultivation date back to the Middle Ages, a period when monks were already developing viticulture on the Alsatian hillsides.

Subsequently, winemakersgradually mastered its vinification to produce exceptional white wines.
The controlled designation of origin today recognizes this grape among the noble grape varieties of Alsace, testifying to its territorial roots. This official recognition consecrates centuries of winemaking expertise transmitted by Alsatian winegrowers, who have succeeded in preserving the
authentic characteristics of this grape on their limestone and granite terroirs.

Characteristics of the Pinot Gris grape

The Pinot Gris grape is distinguished by its compact bunches with pinkish berries, a unique characteristic among white grape varieties. This early-ripening vine develops grapes with grey-pink skin, hence its
distinctive name in the viticultural world. The bunches reach maturity relatively early in the season, allowing winemakers to obtain concentrated grapes.

This noble grape presents a beautiful natural aciditywhich gives freshness and great finesse to the wines produced. Genetically linked to Pinot Noir, it nevertheless retains its own typicity on different limestone terroirs.

The vines cultivated on clay-limestone soilsparticularly reveal the purity of this white grape variety.
This unique morphological characteristic, combined with its adaptability, makes Pinot Gris a variety sought after by winemakers to produce exceptional wines.

Aromatic profile and tasting

Pinot Gris reveals a complex aromatic palette dominated by aromas of exotic fruits and flowers. When tasting, this white wine presents a pale yellow color with characteristic green highlights. Notes of yellow fruits are fully expressed, with nuances of apricot, pear, and sometimes lychee depending on the vinification. This beautiful natural acidity brings freshness and persistence on the palate, which creates a fine balance of taste.

Furthermore, floral aromas, notably white flowers and acacia, harmoniously complete the aromatic bouquet. The discreet minerality underlines the finesse of this expressive grape variety on different terroirs. Depending on the winemaking techniques, Pinot Gris can offer dry or semi-dry profiles.

Food and wine pairings with Pinot Gris

The Pinot Gris wine harmonizes perfectly with white meats, notably veal and poultry with delicate sauces. It traditionally accompanies foie gras. Seafood, crustaceans and shellfishfind an ideal partner in this grape variety thanks to its natural freshness.

In addition, Alsatian sauerkraut is the iconic regional pairing. Goat cheeses, due to their creamy texture, pair harmoniously with the finesse of this white wine. As an aperitif, it elegantly accompanies oysters and other seafood.

Asparagus, a delicate vegetable, particularly reveals the aromatic nuances of this grape variety. For desserts that are not too sweet, Pinot Gris offers a beautiful gustatory complementarity.
