How much wine to provide for a party? The complete guide by occasion
For a party, count on an average of between 0.5 and 0.75 liters per adult for a meal and 2 glasses per person for an aperitif. The type of party, the duration, and the profile of your guests will adjust this figure. With a BIB (bag-in-box), there's no need to open everything at once — the remainder keeps for 4 to 6 weeks.
The basic rule: calculate by timing
A party is rarely a homogeneous block of consumption. There are three key moments:
The aperitif (1h to 1h30): count on 1 to 2 glasses per person. Bubbles, whites, and rosés dominate. Guests arrive with an appetite and in good spirits — consumption is often faster than one anticipates.
The meal: count on 2 to 3 glasses per adult, i.e., 0.25 to 0.38 liters. Depending on the menu, red for meats, white for starters and fish.
The late evening: variable according to the atmosphere. If the party continues after the meal, add 1 to 2 glasses. If your guests move on to other things (soft drinks, spirits), wine consumption often stops.
Golden rule: always add a 10 to 15% margin. In a BIB, the surplus keeps — you don't waste anything.
Table by number of guests
10 guests (aperitif + meal): about 8 to 10 liters → 2 x 5L BIBs or 1 x 10L BIB
20 guests: about 15 to 20 liters → 4 x 5L BIBs or 2 x 10L BIBs
30 guests: about 22 to 28 liters → 3 x 10L BIBs
50 guests: about 35 to 45 liters → 4 to 5 x 10L BIBs or 2 x 22L BIBs
100 guests: about 70 to 90 liters → 3 x 22L BIBs or 2 x 33L BIBs + 1 x 10L BIB
Breakdown by color
No absolute rule, but a breakdown that works well in France:
Summer, outdoors: 40% white/orange, 40% rosé, 20% light red.
Autumn/winter, indoors: 20% white, 60% red, 20% rosé or orange.
Aperitif only: 60% white or rosé, 20% bubbles, 20% light red.
By type of occasion
Every party has its own pace. A birthday where everyone is dancing consumes more than a seated family meal. A barbecue in the afternoon consumes differently than an evening dinner. Consult our guides dedicated to your occasion:

Why the BIB is made for special occasions
The logic is simple: the more guests there are, the more cumbersome the bottle becomes. Uncorking 20 bottles in the middle of service, sorting the empties, managing half-full bottles lying around — the BIB solves all these problems at once. A plugged-in BIB, a smooth service. And the rest is stored impeccably for next time.
For eco-friendly parties, the BIB also significantly reduces waste and the carbon footprint. Our guide eco-friendly event: why the BIB quantifies the difference.
Frequently asked questions
How much wine for 20 people?
For 20 adults (aperitif + meal), count between 15 and 20 liters depending on the duration and the profile of your guests. In practice, 4 x 5L BIBs or 2 x 10L BIBs comfortably cover the evening with a safety margin.
How much wine for 50 people?
For 50 adults, provide between 35 and 45 liters. That is 4 to 5 x 10L BIBs, or 2 x 22L BIBs with a 5L BIB as a backup. Always add a 10 to 15% margin — the surplus keeps in a BIB.
Is it better to get one large BIB or several small ones for a party?
A large format is more practical (less handling) and often more economical per liter. But several formats give you more flexibility regarding colors and wines. For 30+ people, combining a 10L of red and a 10L of white is often the best approach.
