Which white wines are there?
White wines are produced mainly from white grapes (Chardonnay, Sauvignon, Riesling, etc.), but sometimes also from black grapes vinified without maceration. They come in dry, semi-dry, mellow, and sweet varieties depending on their residual sugar content. Each style suits different occasions and pairings.
Types of white wine according to sweetness
To truly understand a white wine, one of the first markers to follow is its sugar content. In reality, this is what remains in the wine once fermentation is finished, and it gives rise to four main families of wine, each with its own character.
First, we distinguish dry white wine, by far the most widespread. With very little residual sugar, it is distinguished by its freshness and liveliness, making it an excellent choice for an aperitif.
Next comes semi-dry white wine. As its name suggests, it has a hint of sweetness that provides a pleasant roundness on the palate. This creates a beautiful balance between the lively side and a more indulgent touch.
Moving up a notch in sweetness, we discover mellow white wine. Its sugar content is more pronounced, giving it an almost velvety texture and intense aromas of ripe fruit.
To top it all off, we find sweet white wine (liquoreux). This is the richest and sweetest category. Obtained from grapes particularly concentrated in sugar, these wines are complex, powerful, and often reserved for accompanying a dessert or a characterful cheese.
The grape variety, the aromatic signature of white wine
If sugar defines the general style, the grape variety is the true aromatic signature of the wine. Some grape varieties offer a particularly lively and light profile.
This is the case with Melon de Bourgogne, which gives Muscadet its famous saline notes, or the Portuguese Arinto, highly prized for its tangy freshness. Conversely, other grapes shape richer and more complex wines.
Chardonnay is a true chameleon, capable of becoming opulent and buttery, while the Chenin from the Loire shines with its aromas of quince and honey. In the south, Marsanne and Grenache Blanc add roundness on the palate. Some grape varieties are purely exuberant, such as Gros Manseng and its intense scents of exotic fruits.
