Le vin blanc est-il alcoolisé ?

Is white wine alcoholic?

Yes, white wine contains alcohol — generally between 11% and 14% depending on the style. A dry white from the Loire often hovers around 12%, while a white from the Rhône can exceed 13.5%. Alcohol is produced during the fermentation of grape sugars. The level varies according to the grape variety, the region, and the harvest date.

Alcohol in white wine: an obvious fact requiring explanation

Stating that white wine is an alcoholic beverage may seem obvious, yet the origin of this alcohol is purely natural. Its presence is not the result of an additive, but the result of a natural process called fermentation. During winemaking, yeasts, which are microorganisms, consume the sugar present in the grape juice.

By feeding, they transform it into two main elements. These notably include carbon dioxide, which evaporates, and ethyl alcohol. It is therefore this biological phenomenon that is the source of alcohol in wine. Without this transformation, grape juice could never become wine. The presence of alcohol is therefore fundamental and inseparable from its very definition.

Alcohol level: what really determines it?

The alcohol content of a white wine depends mainly on the amount of sugar present in the grapes at the time of harvest. The riper and more sun-drenched a grape is, the sweeter it is, and the higher the potential alcohol of the wine will be. The climate of a region therefore plays a major role. In reality, wines from warm areas are often higher in alcohol than those from northern vineyards.

Furthermore, the winemaker's choice of yeast strain can also influence the fermentation yield. It is this delicate balance between terroir, ripeness, and expertise that shapes the character and power of each vintage.

Are there alcohol-free or low-alcohol white wines?

Faced with growing demand, the market now offers dealcoholized or low-alcohol white wines. These alternatives are not grape juices, but real wines that have undergone an additional production step. The most common process is vacuum distillation, which allows the alcohol to evaporate at low temperature without altering the flavors.

The result is a beverage that retains the aromas and structure of the original wine, but with a very reduced alcohol content, often less than 0.5%. It is an innovation that offers a new way to enjoy white wine, meeting the expectations of an audience concerned about moderating their alcohol consumption.

LET IT BiB's approach to the alcohol content of white wines

In our LET IT BiB selection, our white wines generally have a moderate alcohol content, hovering around 12 to 13%. This level is not a goal in itself, but the consequence of respectful viticulture, where the grape reaches its proper ripeness.

Our partner winemakers, whether organic (bio) or biodynamic, primarily seek balance and freshness. The alcohol is thus well integrated and contributes to the harmony of the wine without ever dominating. We remind you, however, that moderation remains a key point. Enjoying a wine means being aware of its alcoholic nature for a tasting that remains a responsible pleasure.
